If you were to ask any teenager or millennial if they watch YouTube or television more, 9 times out of 10 it would be YouTube. What is even more surprising is that this shift has only happened in the past 5 years with the advent of online creators, YouTubers, Vloggers and more.
Never has it been easier to start a YouTube channel and share your thoughts, opinions, crafts, artistic flair to millions of people around the world. What makes this even more powerful is that you can do all of this from your iPhone!
I have personally made dozens of videos with my iPhone as the video quality is nearly on par with a DSLR camera. The only thing really lacking is the audio quality. This is where an external microphone like the Shure MV88 comes into frame, which I will be reviewing today!
Shure MV88 Review! Best Mic For iPhone Vlogging?
Build Quality
Upon opening the box in which the microphone came in, I could tell straight away that this microphone was built well. This is something I have come to expect from all Shure products. Made with brushed aluminium, it felt quite hefty in the hand and I wouldn’t hesitate to throw this into my camera pack or even pocket!
In the box is also a nice little cary case which has padding that moulds to the mic when folded. This is great as I was less likely to loose it. There was also the added satisfaction that this would be protected at all times. P.s. there is an added wind sock in the box for those extra windy days!
Sound Quality
When it comes down to it, what really matters is the sound quality. So how did the audio stack up on this Shure MV88? In a nutshell, it did amazingly well and I would definitely choose using this mic over the inbuilt mic on the iPhone/iPad or iPod any day.
After I connected the mic to my iPhone 7 Plus via the lightening port connecter, all I had todo was download the App and I was good to go! From there I was able to adjust the DSP presets from speech, singing, acoustic, loud and flat. This came in very handy for recording in different environments, whether that was my studio or out in the park.
Compatibility
As I touched on above, this condenser microphone is adaptable with any Apple iOS device that has a lighting port. So this is anything from the iPhone 5 to the current iPhone X.
Price
When it comes to the price of this microphone, it is what I would put in the prosumer category. It’s not the cheapest and it’s not the most expensive. But for the quality of audio that I got for my YouTube videos, I wouldn’t hesitate to spend the money. Can’t go wrong with this one!
