Things to avoid when choosing a YouTube name
Offensive Names
Nothing can turn viewers away faster than an offensive name. The saying “any publicity is good publicity” isn’t always true. If you have a controversial name, your channel will be ignored at best. At worst, you will be reported and banned by YouTube themselves.
Trying to be funny or gain traction by using racial slurs or sensitive subjects won’t work. The YouTube community is already an aggressive place. If you would be ashamed of talking to your family about your channel name then you may want to skip it.
Long Names
Long names and titles can easily go one of two ways. This can especially be true when trying to gain viewers. You want viewers to be able to remember your name. If it’s too long though, chances are viewers will only remember part of it.
When making a name make it to the point. You don’t need to be named “We Get Drunk While Playing Games”, instead go for something short, memorable, and to the point like “Drunk Gaming”. This way your viewers won’t be overwhelmed with a long title.
Copyright
No matter how much you like the character Naruto, your channel shouldn’t be named after him. If you take the name of a copyrighted character or series then your channel is likely to be shut down. This is even more likely if you start to make any monetary gain off the channel.
YouTube is constantly looking for anyone content that might be seen as illegal. Once your channel is locked down it may be hard to get it back up even if you agree to change the name.
CopyCat
Next to copyright is copycat names. If you see a name you like, feel free to let it inspire you but don’t try and steal the idea. There are a ton of channels on YouTube that are just a letter off from celebrities such as PewDiePie. The only traffic these channels get is the occasional accidental click. Most viewers don’t even make it through the first ad.
It’s also not recommended to try and steal part of a channel’s name. This is a sure fire way to anger fans. For example, don’t name your channel “IncredibleMealTime”. If you have picked out a name already, do some research on it to see if any results come back.
Random Numbers
No matter how much you want to match your gamertag to your YouTube, don’t do it if you have a bunch of random numbers. No one wants to remember to search for “M1keSn1p3243”. While numbers can fit into some names, there are way too many channels that look like this.
You should also avoid trying to add edgy numbers into your name. We get that you’re the king of darkness you don’t need to add in the 6 to prove it. Make a name that looks like something you wouldn’t mind having on your subscription list. If it looks like you got lazy when making your account, don’t use it.
Cringe Names
You think this would go without saying but don’t pick a bad name. You wouldn’t believe how many failed Youtube channels have tried to ride off of memes or trendy sayings. The problem is that trends go out just about as quick as they come in.
There are also a lot of young YouTubers who will name there channel ridiculous names. “CupcakeRawrSprinkles” may pull in some young viewers but it isn’t going to stick for long. Think of your name as a brand, you need something that will stick and will roll off the tongue easily.
How to make a great YouTube channel name
Decide Your Niche:
Trying to figure out your name can be hard. To start out though, you need to figure out what type of content you want to make. If you want to be a food channel then you will want to allude to cooking or food in your name. If you want to focus on a certain type of food, you will want the name to represent that.
For example, if you want to focus on Italian cuisine, you could name your channel “Meatball Marinade”. It slides off the tongue easily and lets viewers know what to expect. It is also a familiar set of words that most people are familiar with.
Bounce Around Ideas:
Don’t just slap down a name or be impulsive. Give some time to decide on your name. It’s a great idea to bounce around ideas until you find the perfect one. A good idea is to make a list and write down all of the ideas that you’re fond of. Give yourself a few days to think over the name.
It’s also great to seek advice from family members and friends. It’s always good to get a second opinion on things when you can. Sometimes others can see problems in ideas that we are blind to.
Play On Words:
Now that you know what your channel is going to be about, start to think of clever names. Make up a few different options that relate to your channels theme. Use language that is playful if you are going to have a lighthearted channel.
If you want a more serious channel then pick a name that is straight to the point. If you are a horror channel, then avoid a name that sounds like it belongs to a hair blogger.
Be Unique:
Most of the famous Youtubers risked their livelihoods to commit to their jobs. They spend hours, days, or even months in some cases coming up with creative names. They wanted something that would be memorable to their audience and catch the eyes of new users.
Do some research on what names are already claimed. Use these names as your inspiration and to know what to steer away from. Don’t be afraid of naming your channel something truly out there if it matches your theme and has a nice ring.
Spin Your Name:
If you like your name then feel free to use it in naming your channel. Many YouTubers like “DanIsNotOnFire” put a creative spin on their name to create a channel. This especially works if you’re an animator that will be posting art elsewhere on the internet.
While I don’t suggest using your name like famous YouTubers such as “Shane”. Once you get popular enough, feel free to change your channel’s name to your legal one.
Still stuck? You can use a YouTube name generator
If nothing is jumping out at you then you may need an extra push when it comes to picking a name. Luckily, the internet is full of random name generators that can help start the creative process. This can be a fun way to come up with the perfect name for your YouTube channel.
There are a ton of good YouTube name generators out there one of my favorites is SpinXO. This editor has a ton of features that most basic ones don’t have. It is geared specifically towards helping you find a unique name for your channel.
You can add in several keywords to help the generator out. These categories include topics, niches, and even things you like. Once you put your information in the generator will give you 30 different names to choose from. You will need to check if they’re already taken though.
If you want a simpler name generator then you can use Kparser. All you need to do is type in anything that comes to mind. The generator will then start to work its magic and pop out some name suggestion. You can even use the advanced features to translate the name into different languages.
This site also has brief descriptions on how to pick a great YouTube name. It shows you examples of popular names and teaches you about keywords. This can be a great resource to look at while you’re putting information into the name generator.
There are a few other name generators out there but they all don’t have the same great features. Make sure to have fun with your channel name no matter what you decide to use!
How to change your YouTube channel name
I get it, you made a YouTube account forever ago and you didn’t make the best choices when it came to names. Whether you have your nickname from high school or you named yourself after your favorite Power Ranger, it’s possible to fix your channel.
To begin to change your name, simply log-in to your YouTube account. From there find and click the account icon. Go to your settings and you will need to select the “Edit on Google” option. This will take you to the Google page that has all the information from your account.
Once you do this, you will see an option that says “Update Channel Name” and click it. All you need to do is enter the new name into your account. You can then click “OK” to make the name change go through. This won’t affect the name of your account in other languages though.
If you wish to change the name of your account in all languages then make sure to update your translations. Please be aware that changing your channel name will change your name across all the linked Google accounts. This is why it’s best to have a separate Google just for YouTube.
If you only change your channel name a normal amount or a few times a year, you shouldn’t have a problem. Excess changing of your channel name may alert Google. Likewise, trying to claim a name that has copyright protection as your new channel name will have negative consequences.
Be sure to let your viewers know that you are about to change the channel’s name if you have a following. A sudden change can lead to users unsubscribing to you. It’s best to put out a video before the change and one after that lists your previous and new name in the title of the video.
Hopefully this article gave you some insight on the best YouTube channel names and how to choose the right one for you! Check out some of our other posts about YouTube.
